Recently, I played in the girls’ soccer game against Snow Canyon. This was a huge and intense game, and it was a perfect game to be prepared for. I did a few things to prepare myself for it. As a player, I think everything leading up to the game is just as important as the game itself—everything from what I think mentally to what I do physically throughout the day.
When I wake up, the first thing I do is fill up my 44-ounce water bottle to keep myself hydrated throughout the day. I play all 90 minutes of the game, so I believe hydration is essential in my daily routine on game days. Next, I made myself a nutritious breakfast so I’d have a lot of energy for the following game, such as Snow Canyon. The night before, I made sure I got to bed at a decent time to feel fresh and energized. Throughout the day, I tried to keep a clear mind because this helps me the most mentally to prepare myself.
Before I left the game, I tried to eat something light just to give me some extra energy. Once I finally arrived at the game, during the warm-up and practicing our drills, I tried to think about what I could do in the game to make a difference individually. I also listened to music to give me motivation and drive.
Right before the game, My team and I talked about our individual goals and our team goals for the night. I felt that my team had the most determination we’ve ever had. Every single player who stepped on the field seemed to have the same mindset, to come out hard, with intensity, and that’s all we needed to keep a good game.
After the game, I reflected on how I played individually as a player. We ended up falling short and losing 2-0. I cooled myself down based on the results of the game. I talked to my coaches and teammates about overall how the game went, what we did well, and what we could improve on. Then, I finished my night by going over the film, picking out the good and bad parts
